The Beauty of the Dark: Unplanned Season

Vol. 2, Issue 2

There is an unspoken tradition that tells us the new year is a blank slate.

We rush to sign up for gym memberships, set ambitious goals, and convince ourselves that our transformation will unfold neatly over the upcoming 365 days.

The lotus flower doesn’t bloom in perfect conditions.

It blooms in mud.

Messy. Dark. Unplanned.

Still beautiful.

It’s not like traditional flowers that grow in soil and rely on sunlight. The lotus flower rises above in muddy swamps and dark waters. Regardless of its environmental conditions, this flower  blooms and grows, producing both flowers and seeds at the same time, illustrating the concept of simultaneous cause and effect. Our lives are like the lotus.

Regardless of falling out with friends.

Regardless of the job challenges, gossiping co-workers, and micromanagers.

Regardless of the breakup.

Regardless of feeling misunderstood.

Regardless of feelings of doubt or perceived failure.

You still rise. You continue to grow through adversity in environments where you often believed that would hold you back. You boldly make a conscious choice to see beauty in difficulty internally and externally. Life nuances in all seasons carry lessons we need in the now and future.

Now here’s the truth: the mud is necessary.

Not only are lessons learned in the mud, but this murky environment is where self-trust is built. A space where each challenge sends powerful messages to your mind that you are capable of doing hard things and you are efficient in navigating life transitions: resilient, adaptable, and emotionally aware.

Throughout January, let the lotus flower remind you that growth does not require flawless conditions. Be firm in the conviction of your own limitless potential and the courage to share your beauty and creativity, gifts, and your voice with others.
