I’ve Joined a Sorority at 33. Here’s What I Learned About Pursuing Childhood Dreams and Divine Timing.

At 33, I joined a collegiate sorority as an online student. For years, I thought I had missed my chance, but it turns out my moment was waiting for me in Spring 2025.

What happens when you say yes to community and sisterhood, even when it's unconventional?

It’s not the organization I’ve dreamed of joining since I was a little girl, but it’s the one that perfectly aligns with the woman I’ve become. When I became a member of Sigma Chi Psi Sorority Inc., it wasn’t just a realization of my mature vision, but also a profound sense of belonging and acceptance.

Growing up, I had it all figured out; I just knew I would be part of a timeless circle of women known for their elegance, service, and legacy. In my hometown, I volunteered beside them as a kid, admiring how they held themselves confidently as they poured into their community. After graduation, I moved away from home and attended a college that didn't offer Greek life. Convinced it was no longer for me, I tucked my dreams away as I focused on my school work and internships.

Becoming a pageant queen solidified my love for being a strong representation of an organization in my own bold way through intentional service and walking in purpose (with all the glitz and glam, of course). Hosting workshops and teaching emotional and social learning to students and adults gave clarity to my interest in wellness. I secured a wellness and mindfulness educator certificate and later developed a content creator brand.

Even when I didn’t realize it, I was already living out the values the majority of Greek organizations stand for: service, sisterhood, and resilience.

Years later, I made the decision to enroll in school again, this time studying Positive Psychology and Business to further my wellness education. After numerous conversations with my success coach around engagement and getting involved with school activities, I thought, maybe now’s the time to fulfill that dream. But once again, I hit a wall. As an online student, I wasn’t eligible for most traditional sororities. There were online clubs available, but none offered the in-person Greek life experience I was seeking. I felt disappointed… again. Let’s be real, online students juggle a lot. According to the recent blog ‘Online Learning Statistics’ on BestColleges, 68% of surveyed online students held a full-time or part-time job, and not to mention being a parent, or having a business.

As I continued towards my degree while balancing commitments and moving across the country to support my mother, her Greek stories reminded me that I, too, deserve to experience Greek life, just like any other student, whether online or in person.

I discovered Sigma Chi Psi Sorority, Inc. on a late-night Google search, as if it had found me. Yes, their feminine touch of lavender berets and beautiful orange-gold dresses in heels caught my attention, but their mission was extremely relatable. Since 2019, the multicultural collegiate sorority has been dedicated to bridging the social gap for women pursuing online and nontraditional education by fostering sisterhood, leadership, and academic excellence. Ensuring members receive the tools to strengthen their professional and personal skills, they offer workshops, mentorship, and courses. SCP has contributed over 40,000 hours of good deeds, taking social responsibility, and demonstrating leadership in the community, and that number continues to grow.

As an extroverted queen like myself, I value being social and forming genuine connections. It was essential to align myself with an organization that prioritizes in-person connection. SCP operates in a virtual format but remains deeply committed to creating meaningful connections with sisters in person.

The moment I officially became a member of Sigma Chi Psi Sorority, Inc., and participated in the crossing ceremony was unforgettable. While I can’t share many details out of respect for the organization's privacy, I can say this: There’s something powerful about being surrounded by women who are deeply committed to growth and impact. This crossing experience reignited my deep passion for community service and self-improvement.

Joining a sorority at 33 isn’t common, nor is my path. I am learning that timing isn’t about age; sometimes it's all about alignment. I didn't join the organization I dreamed about as a little girl; instead, I joined the one I needed as a grown woman living her purpose.

This journey has reinforced the values I stand for: self-respect, feminine power, emotional resilience, and intentional living, and I proudly discuss these values on my blog because I choose to live them. Joining SCP isn’t about chasing old dreams; for me, it was honoring new ones while staying grounded in service and purpose. I earned and wore my letters with pride.

If you feel like you’re too old to try something new, or as an online student, feel like you are missing out on a college experience, know this: you are not alone. And to all of my fellow ambitious queens, know there is a space for you.

Now, go ahead and give yourself permission to revisit your dreams and meet them with new eyes.

If this resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please drop a comment below or shoot me an email. Don’t forget to share this with a friend who needs a reminder that it’s never too late for sisterhood.
